Fabian Rangel Jr. is the writer of Doc Unknown, Helena Crash, Space Riders, and more. His new book, Blood Brothers from Dynamite, stars two brothers trying to keep the peace in a city of creatures. Fabian recently told Westfield’s Roger Ash more about this fun, upcoming comic.

Westfield: What is the genesis of Blood Brothers?

Fabian Rangel Jr.: Blood Brothers started with Javi following me on Twitter, and me immediately wanting to work with him. I had an idea to do a supernatural pulp story starring a luchador. But after I asked Javi what kind of stuff he liked to draw, he mentioned fantasy and creature type stuff, so I combined what he wanted to draw with that detective/luchador idea I had before and here we are!

Westfield: What can you tell us about brothers Diego and Gabriel?

Rangel Jr.: Diego is the detective. He was injured in a war before the story takes place and, as a result, can see and communicate with ghosts. He’s the classic hard-boiled detective, drinking and being a jerk most of the time. Gabe is the luchador, very strong, noble, and due to some magic, his skin glows when supernatural threats are present, like a “spider-sense.”.They love each other but get on each other’s nerves and fight, like real brothers.

Westfield: Are you into the luchador culture?

Rangel Jr.: At first, a few years ago, it wasn’t too in depth other than watching old movies. But after I was hired to write the Lucha Underground comics it really took off and I started doing more research online and watching documentaries, reading books, and of course watching matches. There are now luchadors in pretty much all of my comics. They’re superheros!

Westfield: What can readers look forward to in the book?

Rangel Jr.: A lot of insane monsters and creatures designs, and a fun story about two brothers doing the best they can to work together. Lot of action, humor, and again, just really cool monsters.

Westfield: Who are some of the other characters readers will meet?

Rangel Jr.: There are a couple of wolfmen brothers, Medusa (the classic monster but with a 1940s era twist), Calavera (a skeleton faced gangster), and El Demonio, a demon wrestler who materializes from a cursed lucha mask.

Westfield: You’re working with artist Javier Caba on the series. What can you say about your collaboration?

Rangel Jr.: It’s been a blast, and one of the most worry free comics I’ve been a part of. From us meeting and deciding to work together, to the actual comic work, we’ve been on the same page consistently. His creature design work is my favorite part of Blood Brothers for sure, just seeing him run wild with the background characters. Really hoping we continue to work together in the future.

Westfield: Any closing comments?

Rangel Jr.: Blood Brothers is a really fun comic to write, and I think readers will be able to tell how much of a blast Javi and I are having while we make it. People should make sure to preorder so they can go on this wild ride with us!
