Ryan Browne, among his many comic credits, is the creator of God Hates Astronauts and Blast Furnace and is the co-creator of Curse Words with Charles Soule. Now, he’s writing the upcoming Project Superpowers: Hero Killers from Dynamite. Westfield’s Roger Ash recently spoke with Browne about this comic that features a new look at super hero sidekicks.

Westfield: This series looks to explore the hero/sidekick relationship. What about that dynamic intrigues you?

Ryan Browne: Well first and foremost, this book is going to be a dark comedy. The original idea came from seeing that the classic character Black Terror actually has a sidekick named, uh, Tim. Just Tim. That alone was funny enough for me to write a whole series around. When your sidekick isn’t even important enough to be given a super name? That’s awesome. That set up the whole relationship between the two to me.

Westfield: How did you come to explore that dynamic in Project Superpowers: Hero Killers?

Browne: It’s all about respect, and in this book, sidekicks get no respect. Eventually the trio of sidekicks, Captain Battle, Jr., Sparky, and Tim run out of ways to handle being mistreated and ignored–and they strike back in a truly dark and hilarious way!

Westfield: What can readers look forward to in the series?

Browne: A bunch of super jerks in tights. A Coen Brothersesque story of sidekicks and the dark decisions they make to achieve the fame and public recognition they desire. What happens when three dumb kids dive headfirst into the deep end and they can’t even dog paddle? You’ll find out, and it’ll be awesome!

Westfield: Who are the main characters we’ll meet?

Browne: You’ll get a little bit of everyone. Obviously the three side-kicks are the main attraction, but we will also feature pretty much every main hero from Project Superpowers. My goal is to make Pete Woods lose his mind by the amount of giant superhero crowd scenes he has to draw. I hope he can channel his inner George Perez!!!

Westfield: You’re working with artist Pete Woods on Hero Killers. What can you say about your collaboration?

Browne: He’s truly fantastic. It’s so nice work with an artist who does a much better job of visualizing this world than I ever would. His work is so clean and dynamic–you guys are going to love it!

Westfield: Any closing comments?

Browne: Sure! This book is going to be so dang bonkers! Whatever you know Project Superpowers to be, this book will grab the stick and steer the boat straight into the damn mountain!
