Westfield: What is the genesis of Middlewest?

Skottie Young: A few years back I did a sketch of a kid talking to something in a corn field. It was kind of creepy. I decided then that I wanted to tell a story set in a Midwest like environment and then it just stared to build from there. Nothing from that drawing is in this book, but that was where it all started. A quick little doodle one day.

Westfield: What can you tell us about the lead character, Abel?

Young: He’s a kid who’s never been outside the very small town he lives in. He’s a hard worker and has a paper route for years thru elementary school, into middle school. It’s just him and his dad and he struggles with that in various ways. Other than that, you’ll just have to read the book! That’s the fun part.

Westfield: Who are some of the other major characters readers will meet?

Young: I’m going to leave all the fun stuff for you to read. But right up front we meet Abel’s dad, Dale. and Abel’s… well, I don’t know what to call the fox. It’s like Abel’s Jiminy Cricket, but instead of being his morality guide, fox is there to teach Abel about getting by in Middlewest, in any way he has to.

Westfield: What can readers look forward to in Middlewest?

Young: Adventure, friendship, magic, pain, loss, love… you know… all the things. Really, we are sending Abel on a journey where he’s going to face all the things life has to throw at us and see if he comes out on the other side in one piece.

Westfield: You’re working with Jorge Corona on the series. What can you say about your collaboration?

Young: I can say that people are going to FLIP OUT when they see his work along with Jean-Francois Beaulieu’s colors. It’s been an amazing collaboration so far and I look forward to much, much more of it!

Westfield: Are there any books or creators whose work inspired Middlewest?

Young: I’d say Pinocchio, Never Ending Story, Dark Crystal, An American Tail, Secret of Nihm, and things like that inspired the tone and adventure. But nothing directly to the story elements. Some of that has come from personal things and some from just… wherever ideas from. Haha.
