I trust my friends. I trust those whose work I admire. Their word is the best advertising. When it comes to pop culture, it’s usually our friends that we turn to find out what’s new, what’s neat/cool/groovy/awesome. This week I’ve asked some of my most trusted and closest creative friends to recommend something they like/love/find useful.

The Great War: A solid, easily digestible docu-series on World War 1, relaying key events week by week as they happened 100 years ago to date. Perfect for history nerds and those that simply realize WWI may have been an underwhelmingly fleeting discussion in their formative education… And it’s all free! Heroes & Icons Recommended by Bobby Nash

Heroes & Icons Recommended by Bobby Nash

There are a number of cable channels that fill their schedule with shows from yesteryear and we love that we can find episodes of The Avengers, Star Trek, Doctor Who, The A-Team, The Twilight Zone, Miami Vice, and oh so much more on them. MeTV, Cozi TV, Antenna TV, and Decades Binge have all been good places to watch some really cool TV. Now, Heroes & Icons has been added to that list.

If there was ever a channel that was programmed right out of my head, H&I is it. 6 days a week, they play All Star Trek, that’s 1 episode of each Star Trek series and on Sundays, the animated series is also shown. In addition to morning westerns, afternoon police detectives, Hercules, Xena, and Saturday’s super-hero line up, Heroes & Icon is a great channel.

Hell or High Water

This is one of my favorite films from last year. I think it is special because of the great writing and direction. Films like this don’t come along very often. When they do we need to support them.

Dwayne Turner

Artist, Filmmaker, Director, Storyboard Artist on Spectral, Alice Through The Looking Glass, Tron, The Jungle Book, Enders Game.

Keep an eye open for my short film which I will debut this year.

Here’s an amazing little device that every guitar-playing artist can use when they need to take a those much-needed breaks from long hours at the drawing desk to rest their eyes and brain and flex their repetitive motion strained knuckles: the DIGITECH TRIO+ . Just plug this on-demand band-in-a-box between your guitar and your desk-side practice amp, set the dial to the song style that you want, and strum the basic chords to your song. The Trio+ hears the chords and adds corresponding bass and drum parts! It’s the second-most fun a person can have for under $300! link: http://digitech.com/en-US/products/trio-plus

I recommend good friends – sounds melodramatic, but it is true – without you, and Chuck Dixon, I would be even more useless than I am – and you have probably kept me from going to jail a couple times! Beyond that, my usual lame jokes – good vodka, etc. I’m useless! But I look forward to the recommendations from you and your creative upper-crusters! I also recommend aspiring artists seek out the work of Michael Golden, Jim Steranko, and the wonderful Wally Wood.

This Is England Recommended By Dominique Provost-Chalkley

This is England (TV Show) – Directed by Shane Meadows, this Mini Series gives you a real insight into working class Britain in this gripping, gritty British Drama. The 3 seasons span 1986, ’88 and ’90 and the performances are some of the best I have ever seen on TV.

Very inspiring, totally heart breaking and definitely worth a watch!

Overnight Oats:

Super easy, extremely yummy, very healthy breakfast recipe for anyone who is busy and has little time in the morning.

As an actress we often have very early mornings and well… I like my bed – So, this recipe means I can prepare it the night before. Takes less than 5 minutes to prep and takes delicious!

New Holland Tractor Recommended by Gary Kwapisz

New Holland Tractor Recommended by Gary Kwapisz

It was a beautiful day here and I just got in from working on a stonewall. I don’t know what I’d do without my New Holland tractor with its front end loader to collect the big stones and then move them around. But if I weren’t doing P90 x I wouldn’t be moving stones at all, so without both of them no stone walls.

Photo Books: Create your own photo book from iPhoto. We all take hundreds, if not thousands, of photos a year and the mostly stay on your phone or computer. I have two issues with this…

  1. I have re-occuring nightmare that my computer crashes or is stolen and I lose all my photos from the past years.
  2. I love looking at photographs, like when at home and mom pulled out a box of old photos from her childhood. You find family at dinner, bad out of focus photos, a dog in a dress, photos with all the people’s heads cut off, my uncle pulling my mom’s hair as kid, and picture of guy in a top hat smoking a pipe in shorts, dress shirt in a rocking chair on a porch and no one knows who he is or why we have his photo.

I have found a solution I can not live without: PHOTO BOOKS. I use the Apple version that is the iPhoto program, but there are several others out there. And because I don’t have time, and do love odd conversation starting pictures, I group my photos by year and drop them all in 1 big book and send it off to print.

You can edit yourself, only picking the “perfect” picture or… you can drop them all in. The ones with someone with one eye half closed, or the family picture with the 3-year-old blurred and running out of frame, or a picture of some random people you for some reason have on your phone from a late night out after Comic-Con.

I can picture myself with my kids in 20 years looking back on our photobook from 2017, making fun our clothes, how much hair dad used to have, and our trip to skiing. Who knows where my computer or digitally saved photos will be in 20 years… but I know where my book will be, on the bookshelf next to Locke & Key Volume 1!

Scrivener!

Scrivener is a script writing software that was developed with writers in mind. My favorite feature is the cork board view, which allows you to see descriptions of every scene and chapter on a notecard so you can see your story all at once. Anything you reorganize on the cork board is automatically reflected in the script. I keep the scripts for the entire The Dreamer series in one document (that’s six graphic novels!) and it’s a breeze to find what I need. I even have a folder for research, and a folder for unused scenes right within my document. Scrivener comes preloaded with templates for both screenplays and comic book scripts. https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.php

Serial App Recommended by Ted Adams

Serial App Recommended by Ted Adams

Serial App. A free iOs App that delivers classic literature to you on a daily basis. You choose the book and once a day you get 8 to 15 minutes of the book to read. Since downloading it last summer, I’ve read: Crime & Punishment, The Pickwick Papers, Dracula, The Road (London, not McCarthy), The Shunned House, The Lodger, My Man Jeeves, and Confessions of an English Opium Eater. The time I used to mindlessly spend looking at Twitter, I now spend reading classic works of literature.

The novels of Micheal McDowell, the author behind films like Beetlejuice , The Nightmare Before Christmas and Dark Shadows, McDowell was an underrated novelist who penned a slew of paperback gothic horror ( and more under several pseudonyms ) before Hollywood came calling . I can’t recommend his work more highly.

MANNIX Recommended by John K. Snyder III

MANNIX Recommended by John K. Snyder III

Reruns of MANNIX on the Me-TV network. Just started up with season one where Mannix(Mike Connors) is working for high-tech(circa 1967) detective agency Intertect.

Once season two kicks in, he goes solo, assisted by Peggy Flair(Gail Fisher).

Guaranteed body count pretty much every episode.

No proper mustache sporting man should ever be without this gem. Same mechanics as a switchblade knife and yet delicate enough to tame the wildest of staches. It’s portable and discrete and I love its vintage look.
